Nine Skincare Mistakes Worth Unlearning
Good skin is often less about what you add and more about what you stop doing. These are the habits we see most often, and the easy fixes that make a real difference.
1. Skipping sunscreen
If you only do one thing for your skin, make it this. UV exposure is behind most visible signs of ageing, from fine lines to uneven tone, and New Zealand's UV is some of the strongest in the world. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning, rain or shine, and reapply every two hours when you're outside.
2. Over-cleansing
A squeaky-clean feeling usually means you've stripped away the oils your skin needs. Washing too often or using harsh cleansers can leave skin tight, dry and irritated. Cleanse twice a day with something gentle that suits your skin type, and leave it at that.
3. Ignoring your skin type
Oily, dry, combination and sensitive skin all need different things. Using products designed for someone else's skin is one of the fastest ways to throw yours off balance. Get to know your skin, then choose products that work with it.
4. Skipping moisturiser
Every skin type needs moisture, including oily skin. When skin is dehydrated, it can overcompensate by producing more oil. Look for a moisturiser with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides, and choose a lighter texture if you're oil-prone.
5. Using too many actives
It's tempting to try everything, but layering multiple active ingredients at once can overwhelm your skin and lead to redness and irritation. A simple routine with a few well-chosen products will almost always outperform a crowded shelf.
6. Picking at breakouts
Squeezing or picking a blemish pushes bacteria deeper and can lead to infection, marks and scarring. Hands off. Let it heal on its own, or use a targeted treatment if you need to speed things along.
7. Stopping at your jawline
Your neck and chest are exposed to the same sun and environment as your face, but they rarely get the same care. Extend your moisturiser and sunscreen down past your jaw every time.
8. Sleeping in makeup
Going to bed without taking your makeup off can clog pores and lead to breakouts. However tired you are, cleanse before bed. Your skin does most of its repair work overnight, so give it a clean start.
9. Forgetting the basics
Skin reflects how you're looking after yourself overall. Sleep, stress and hydration all show up on your face. Topical care matters, but so does getting to bed on time.
Healthy skin comes down to consistency, not complexity. Know your skin type, keep your routine simple, wear sunscreen every day, and give your skin time. Small, steady habits are what add up to that glow.
