How to take care of Winter Skin
Have you ever noticed that winter absolutely wreaks havoc on your skin? Bizarre right? You would think the harsh summer sun would dry out your skin more.
Cold temperatures and low humidity levels result in dry air that tends to draw moisture away from your skin. Harsh winter winds and dry indoor heat can also make the problem worse and lead to cracked and even bleeding skin. Skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis may also flare up during these cold, dry months. Many suffer from ‘winter rash’ as well. Winter rash is a general diagnosis of skin when it becomes irritated, red, scaly, or itchy in the winter due to the dry and cold air.
Now let’s chat about how you can prevent winter skin issues or at least help minimise the symptoms.
Avoid having long baths. Believe it or not, but hot water removes the skins naturals oils very quickly leaving it very dry.
Exfoliate your skin no more than 2-3 times a week. Using a form of body and face exfoliator will help remove dryness, flakiness and dirt.
Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells and lets your skin breathe, which can help improve your complexion. Using a form of exfoliator can also help keep your pores clear, which is key for keeping breakouts under control this winter. We recommend using both a body and face exfoliator. However make sure you don’t over-exfoliate. We want to protect that beautiful skin of yours and anymore than 2-3 exfoliations a week may result in your skin becoming more dry and irritated.
Moisturise! We already know how important it is to moisturise your skin. Now with these cold, harsh temperatures drying out our skin it is so important to be moisturising regularly and keeping your skin hydrated. It is especially important because the dryness and stiffness of your skin during the cold months will make it susceptible to infections, outbreaks and irritation. Applying moisturisers and oils after showering, exfoliating and before bed can help hydrate your skin allowing that summer glow to carry on into winter.
Drink water. The age old skincare tip we always hear. Drink more water, especially this summer. Due to the cold temperatures most of us forget to drink water frequently throughout the day. However this impacts greatly on our skin! Keeping your water intake up is always key to hydrating your body to help support clear skin especially now more than ever.
Eat clean. There is nothing I personally enjoy more than a hot, cheeky takeaway on a cold winters night. And that is absolutely okay. Treat yourself! But make sure you are still getting all the correct fruit, veggies and vitamins in when indulging on those winter meals.
And while this last tip isn’t crucial…I know a lot of us all feel the same way. Remember to treat yourself to a pamper night that includes fake tanning. If you’re like us and lose your gorgeous natural bronzy glow. Then don’t be afraid to apply a little fake tan to get you feeling and looking your best this winter!
